Ms. Naomi Oyoe Oti, a nurse at the Centre for Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine, has been presented with the ISNCC Past Presidents Award for delivery of quality health care to cancer patients. Her award is in recognition of her initiative and hardwork in the care of oncology patients in the Hospital over the years.

The Korle Bu Bulletin met up with Ms Oti, who was at the Pediatric Oncology Unit busily attending to patients. She made time with the Korle Bu Bulletin and revealed that the award has given her much encouragement in her work.

She said that in line with the Hospital’s vision to provide quality health to patients, she intends to train nurses to provide continuous education and care in handling patients with cancer. This, she hopes, will make such patients more comfortable”, she said.

She said she has been training some nurses in Korle Bu to provide specialized care for oncology cases and patients
Her award, the Past Presidents Award, is presented to cancer nurses from low or middle income countries who have initiated and sustained a program of cancer care in their respective country. Ms Oti, received her award at the closing ceremony of the ISCNCC in Hong Kong, China.

For the future, Ms. Oti wants to organise an oncology team who will attend to and train other care givers in patients care.
She also hopes to have an efficient record-keeping system for oncology patients who visit the Hospital for care. She noted that the current records of oncology patients is not comprehensive and this makes it difficult for decision-making.
