KORLE BU’S SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY CENTRE RECEIVES A BOOST

To enhance patient experience in the Hospital, the Speech and Language Therapy Centre (SLTC), one of the leading public speech centres in Ghana has been moved to a bigger area and refurbished at a cost of over GHc200,000.

The new area has facilities for both children and adults. In the near future, the Centre will be providing a holistic speech and language services under one roof.

In a short ceremony to handover the refurbished Centre, the head of the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Sub-BMC. Dr. Kenneth Baidoo noted that moving the Speech and Language Therapy Centre to a bigger place had come at a good time.

He said the Peadiatric Audiology Centre will, for instance, be incorporating a cochlear implant service for the benefit of patients who will require it.

The SLT Centre evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients with communication, voice and swallowing disorders. Autistic children, cleft lip and palate patients and people who stammer are also attended to and treated by highly professional speech and language therapists.

The newly refurbished Speech and Language Therapy Centre is located at the old Eye Clinic. It was refurbished with support from the Hospital Management, Ms Karen Wylie, an Australian Speech and Language Therapist and other sponsors.
The ceremony was witnessed by the Australian High Commissioner, His Excellency Andrew Barnes.

District Grand Lodge Of Ghana Donates To Korle Bu The District Grand Lodge (DGL) of Ghana, an Institute of Freemason operating under the United Grand Lodge of England has made a donation of a C-Arm Fluoroscopic X-Ray Machine valued at $42,000 to the Urology Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).

Mr Isaac O. Hood, the Grand Master of DGL, with his delegation, presented the documents of the machine to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the KBTH, Dr Felix Anyah.
Mr Hood said their presentation was not the first of its kind, as the Group had donated an Electromyogram machine to the Hospital 13 years ago. He gave the assurance that the DGL would continue to support the Hospital to respond to the healthcare needs of the public.

Dr James Edward Mensah, the head of the Urology Department of the Hospital said cases of kidney stones are referred to South Africa and India at an estimated cost of about $10,000 because we did not have the requisite equipment but in Ghana, the procedure could be done at GH¢2,000.

He again spoke about his last cutting he had to do where they had to cut a patient to locate a stone in a patient’s kidney but with this machine in hand now the stone will be easily located and treated on.

“Every week, we operate on three patients with kidney stones at this facility because the incidence of this disease is increasing, especially among people whose work confines them to their offices”, he added. He said the commonest causes of kidney stones was failure to drink enough water, as well as living a sedentary lifestyle.

“We are seeing most of these cases among bankers and it is amazing. We are worried about this trend because kidney stones can predispose patients to other infections that are fatal. It can also damage the kidney permanently if the stone is not removed in good time,” he said.

He advised the Hospital to continue training more Urologists and also maintain the C-arm fluoroscopy machine to make it last longer and fully serve its purpose.
The acting Director of Medical Affairs, Dr Frederick Kwarteng, called for public private partnerships and support systems to ensure that the required equipment are supplied to the Hospital
